ECNS App DownloadThe United Kingdom is to immediately suspend extraditions to Hong Kong following China implementing the new national security law for the special administrative region, Britains foreign secretary has announced on Monday.
Speaking to members of the British Parliament in the House of Commons, Dominic Rabb claimed the move was “a reasonable and proportionate response” to what he said was “Chinas failure to live up to … international obligations with respect to Hong Kong”.
“We want to work with China,” Raab said. “There is enormous scope for positive, constructive, engagement. But, as we strive for that positive relationship, we are also clear-sighted about the challenges that lie ahead.”
The announcement came as Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the British government will not “completely abandon our policy of engagement” with Beijing.
Chinas Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Wang Wenbin, earlier on Monday said recent remarks and actions by Britain in connection with Hong Kong violated international laws and international relations, and grossly interfered in Chinas internal affairs.
“It has turned a blind eye to the simple fact that the enacted national security law is for the sustained success of one country, two systems,” Wang said. “We strongly condemn this and urge the British government not to go further down the wrong path, as so to avoid further harm to Sino-UK relations.”MorePhotoFace masks made mandatory in MelbourneParks witness more visitors as Beijing downgrades COVID-19 emergency response levelFace-masked fans attend first day of sumo in five monthsMovie theaters in Shanghai reopen on Monday Queen knights 100-year-old veteran for raising millions for NHSFlood-fighting drills held in ShanghaiSlackliner gives high-altitude performanceYangtze Rivers No. 2 flood passes Three Gorges DamUAEs Mars explorer launches from Japans Space CenterNew Genoa bridge underwent static testing operations ahead of inauguration700-year-old Guanyin Pavilion still standing despite Yangtze flood in HubeiDaylily transforms life of farmers in NingxiaHuge lotus plant on full displayRetailers to require face masks in stores in U.S.Palestinian artist makes face mask from cactus near NablusCutout photos of fans seen on stand at Arena Corinthians in Sao PauloArmed police officers reinforce Sanlongwei section of levee in Wuhu, E ChinaBeijing starts high school entrance examChina-Laos railway completes both cross-Mekong River bridges beam installationFirst images released of the Sun up close from ESAs Solar OrbiterCarrier rocket arrives at launch pad to lift Chinas Tianwen 1 Mars probeRiders race to catch sheep in Xinjiang wetlandComet NEOWISE seen in sky over Beijings suburbFrance launches 2020 summer salesTop of Eiffel Tower reopens to publicTokyo raises warning level for spread of COVID-19 to highestSanmenxia Reservoir releases water to ensure enough flood storage capacityConvenience store in Japan using robot to stock shelvesFlood peak passes through Yangtze River section in NanjingU.S. state of Florida sets new record for daily coronavirus casesChina Southerns ARJ21 jet completes maiden flightMaintenance workers keep passengers safeQuarantine ends in Guangdong for Macao travelersA look at some youth skill training programs on World Youth Skills DayFireworks light up sky over Eiffel Tower to celebrate Bastille DayArmed police troops join flood control operations in JiangxiMost popular in 24h$(function () {$.ajax({type: “get”,dataType: “json”,url: “/part/6/ecns_rank24h.json”,success: function (status) {var str = “”;$.each(status,function(index,obj){obj.title = obj.title.replace(/'/g, ');str +=+obj[“title”]+;});$(“#rank24″).html(str);},error:function(status){}});});MoreTop newsUK suspends extraditions to Hong Kong China urges U.S. to discard Cold War mentality Research finds vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 produces immunity in mice, macaques China prepares two relay satellites for Mars mission Beijing resumes trans-regional group toursMoreVideoChinese slackline walker starts nationwide challenge tourMt.
