My biological clock is ticking. I have the rest of my life to find a man, but having a baby is what I need to do right now. What is it like being a leftover woman who wants to be a mother? In China, there is a social stigma against woman having a child without a husband. That is probably why the authorities decided to slap these women with a “social maintenance fee” for violating family planning policy. “We are bad for the family, bad for the kid,” one Chinese single mother commented. “They make it sound like we single mothers are going to destroy our society.”Being a single mother by choice in your 30s and 40s is different from women in their 20s who find themselves pregnant. Single mothers by choice are those who are well educated with a good salary. Many of my “leftover” female friends did not plan to be single mothers. They just cannot find the right partner.Since China lifted the one-child policy, there has been a lot of discussion about allowing single women to have children rather than pushing women to get married and have children. Some experts suggest loosening the family planning policy for single women. By doing so, they believe Chinas population will increase quickly. However, when will China officially lift the restrictions on single mothers? Who knows. Before it happens, my “leftover” female friends are secretly reaching for plan B. The big first step is where to get the sperm. Unlike women in the US, single women in China are not qualified to apply. If they are not financially challenged, they can order it from the US, or consider egg freezing. The cheaper solution is to find someone who is willing to help. One of my friends is planning to get herself pregnant on a one-night stand and marry her Chinese gay best friend so that she can have a valid “reproduction permit” from the government. When she told her gay best friend about her plan, he asked, “What if our baby has blue eyes?” This article was published on the Global Times Metropolitan section Two Cents page, a space for reader submissions, including opinion, humor and satire.
